We all come into contact with radiation – microwaves and radio waves, for example, but this non-ionising radiation is generally harmless. Ionising radiation on the other hand, produces immediate chemical effects on human tissue.
There are specific guidelines enforced by the Health and Safety Executive and the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 that aim to limit the amount of radiation employees are exposed to. Unfortunately, these set limits are not always adhered to. Where your employer has breached their duty of care to you and compromised your health, there may be strong grounds to make a radiation sickness claim on the basis of negligence.
Radiation sickness is the result of exposure to very large doses of ionising radiation, which can be acute (a single large exposure) or chronic (a series of small exposures spread over time).
Within the workplace exposure can be accidental, as is the case with nuclear power plant accidents, or intentional, for example inside neonatal wards at hospitals where nurses often hold babies still during an X-ray.
If a link can be made between your working conditions and symptoms, leading to a diagnosis of radiation sickness, it is likely that you will be eligible to make a hazardous substance claim against your employer.
Generally radiation sickness is associated with acute exposure and has a characteristic set of symptoms that appear in an orderly fashion. Chronic exposure is usually associated with delayed medical problems, such as cancer and premature ageing, which may happen over a long period of time.
The symptoms of radiation sickness vary depending on the type of radiation you have been exposed to, for how long, and which part of the body has been exposed. At worst, radiation exposure can lead to death if the person has been exposed to a significantly high dosage at one time.
Below are just a handful of the symptoms of radiation sickness;
