Aneurysm Negligence Claims

An unfortunate and fast-acting condition, a ruptured (burst) brain aneurysm can lead to stroke, brain damage and disability.

There can be no room for error when a patient visits their doctor showing symptoms of an aneurysm and should a misdiagnosis or failure to administer treatment have taken place you will be entitled to make an aneurysm negligence claim.

What is an Aneurysm?

An aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel caused by a weakness in the blood vessel wall, usually where it branches.

They can develop in any blood vessel throughout the body, however they are most common in the brain and abdominal aorta –  the artery that transports blood away from the heart to the rest of the body.

As blood passes through the weakened blood vessel, the blood pressure causes a small area to bulge outwards like a balloon.

Treatment for an aneurysm that has ruptured (burst) or that doctors suspect is at risk of doing so, will involve surgery. With this surgery there is serious risk of complications, such as brain damage and stroke, so there is a reluctance to carry it out purely for preventative reasons.

Common symptoms of an Aneurysm

Only ruptured aneurysms tend to cause symptoms , unless the aneurysm is large and is putting pressure onto the tissues or nerves inside the brain.

Ruptured brain aneurysm symptoms include:

  • Sudden agonising headache
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sensitivity to light and problems with vision
  • Confusion
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea

Both levels of the condition should be taken extremely seriously and require urgent medical attention.

A ruptured aneurysm will result in a subarachnoid haemorrhage and depending on the severity of the haemorrhage, brain damage or death may result.

There is unfortunately nothing that can prevent an aneurysm from developing but smokers and people with high blood pressure are at an increased risk.
